Resistance By Taraneh Whammy
at Luggage Store Gallery: Jan 18- Mar 2, 2013
Event: February 23, 7-10
Readings by Erika Abrahamian, Persis Karim, Nazy Kaviani, Sepideh Khosrowjah, Sepa Sama, Ari Siletz, Amir Soltani and Bella Warda. Music performances by Shahab Paranj and Sote.
The Luggage Store Gallery’s Projection Series will feature video projects by Ali Dadgar, caraballo-farman, Gita Hashemi, Amitis Motevalli and Azin Seraj. The musical performances engage with the history and stories of the revolutionary era in Iran. For his piece VOKS, Sote (aka Ata Ebtekar) uses protest chants and slogans as source material, while Shahb Paranj’s percussion ensemble reflects on the history of activism in Iran.
Readings will include selections from Tremors edited by Persis Karim and Anita Amirrezvani, as well as from Confronting the Clash by Sepa Sama and Sinan Ziza. Amir Soltani will read from his acclaimed graphic novel Zahra’s Paradise, and Sepideh Khosrowjah will share a scene from her new play Green Illusion (Vahm-e Sabz).
Taraneh Hemami transforms, exalts and commodifies the powerful graphic imagery of the underground culture of protest to create objects of both fine art and of the everyday. Handcrafted and manufactured replications of historical archives belonging to the Iranian Student Association of Northern California (1964-1984), explore decades of collective struggle within Iran and its diaspora. Through this examination of a specific Iranian experience, Resistance investigates the universal connections between radical movements across times and geographies.
