On this rare occasion, Chicago based vocal artist Carol Genetti is coming together with long time collaborators Katherine young and Adam Sonderberg along with local artists Damon Smith and Theresa Wong for an evening of daring exploration in improvised music.

Performer Bios

Carol Genetti is a vocalist focused on improvisation pure sonic exploration. Her work is grounded in an almost inhuman extended technique, while also relying on traditional vocal styles such as jazz, Hindustani and Bulgarian folk singing. Genetti has toured throughout the US, Canada, France and Germany and has collaborated with artists including Pauline Oliveros, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Toshi Makihara, and Jon Mueller. Katherine Young is a composer and bassoonist whose pieces use acoustic and electronic instruments and often involve open forms, fusing traditional and alternative notation. She performs regularly with Civil War and with her duo Architeuthis Walks on Land. She is a founding member of the contemporary chamber collective Till by Burning, where she produces concerts of 20th- and 21st-century compositions and related education projects. Katherine has collborated with improvisers such as Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jessica Pavone, Carol Genetti, and Jason Ajemian. Her recordings are available on the L’innomable and Longbox Labels.

Adam Sonderberg is an electronic music artist working predominantly with concrete-based compositions utilizing the computer as a discrete processing and assembly tool. He is a co-founder of the Dropp ensemble and Civil War. His selected discography includes over a dozen releases available on the Absurd, BOXmedia, Crouton, Tonschacht and Longbox labels.

Bassist Damon Smith has been an active member of the Bay Area’s Creative Music community for over fifteen years, founding the Luggage Store New Music series in 1991. His improvisational techniques are rooted in the free jazz tradition and In his live and recorded efforts he focuses on the extended double bass and on instant composition.

Cellist Theresa Wong is an improviser and composer exploring a world of sound that includes her instrument, voice and the amplified bicycle. She studied design in the Bay Area and Vienna, and spent several years in Italy exploring interdisciplinary performance. Ms. Wong is currently pursuing an MFA in
performance at Mills College.
